The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is a UK government body responsible for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. The DBS Update Service is a crucial on-going tool for individuals working with vulnerable groups, enabling them to maintain a clear and accurate DBS check.
A DBS Check is a one-off check of a persons Criminal Record. It gives an at-the-time reflection of an individuals criminal record and any offenses they may have committed. As it is a “snapshot” of an individuals current history, employers often ask for these to be renewed periodically or when starting a new role to ensure that you haven’t committed any offences that they aren’t aware of since your last check.
What’s the process for applying for your DBS Check?
The good news – if you’re working with Staff One – is that we take care of the whole process for you. We offer an online portal and are able to take you through the whole process remotely.
The standard process for getting your DBS is really simple:
– Application: Individuals apply for a DBS check through their employer or a registered body.
You can click here to start the application process.
– Processing: The DBS checks the applicant’s criminal record against national police databases.
– Certificate Issuance: If the check is clear, a DBS certificate is issued. This certificate is valid for a specific period and may need to be renewed.
How Does the DBS Update Service Work?
A DBS Check gives a snapshot of your criminal history at that time only and can take several weeks to receive, once applied for. The Update Service allows for your DBS to be continually in-date and checking it takes just minutes. You don’t need to get a new DBS if you change employers and you won’t need to get your DBS renewed either. Once you have your DBS certificate/number you can enroll on the service (you must do so within 28 days) for a small fee (currently £13 per year). Once you’ve done this you can provide an instant DBS check to anybody requiring you to do so using your own personal share code.
