It’s the day that you have been dreading. Your rainmaker has just handed in their notice – and worse still they’re off to your biggest rival.
How you react to a resignation could have a significant impact on your business and workforce.
What things should bosses consider?
Is it worth trying to change the employee’s mind?
It’s important to find out why your employee is resigning. There could be a number of reasons. Only when you have a clear picture of why they want to move on will you be able to assess whether it’s worth trying to persuade them to stay. It could be a money issue and you may feel that by promising a bigger salary you can get your star performer to reconsider.
There’s likely to be more to it than that though – and don’t think you can always just throw some extra cash to retain them. If the employee has specific gripes about the business, such as the direction which it is going or how they are being managed by a particular person, you might not be able to offer ways to resolve their concerns.
